Is Homeschool about control

The more I learn I realize that I want to train my children up in the Lord and the only way to do that is through freedom. I need to give my children the 'gift' of freedom.

Early Schooling

Congresswoman Edith Green in 1973 said: "knowledge without action is futile" (pointless). "but action without knowledge is fatal". - (Better Late Than Early -- When trying to find support for early entrance into regular school, instead they found "overwhelming evidence to the contrary")

Children need to be with loving parents the majority of the day if possible! This rings true to my heart.  While preschool/early schooling for disadvantaged and handicapped children can be helpful.

What is Charity? And how do we obtain it?

Charity is greater than faith and hope.

This morning I prayed to be given then gift of charity. I remember my Dad saying he would never pray for charity again because he ended up losing his job or something to that effect.  Also, a brother in law prayed for humility and got released from him calling in the bishopric. So I was a little bit leary. But I tried to be specific and say I wanted to feel love for people and not just feel a monetary difference.

I was able to recognize the spirit prompting me who I need to help.

Maria wanted to play with Danica, so Audra texted us so we would go.  Then we ended up going to the library for storytime because Wyatt noticed Audra west East instead of West. She want going home so we couldn't race home.

1. The fatherless.  First there was an 18 year old girl sitting in the library entrance waiting for it to open. She looked a bit unkempt, greasy hair. Typically that makes me feel uncomfortable. I felt like I should talk to her.  Dominic ended up bumping his head so then I went into the hall.  That was the catalyst to help me start the conversion.

Some guy walked in and then out. She mentioned it was her ex-boyfriend.  She then went on to tell me her boyfriend was in the hospital because he cut himself.  He had broken his promise to her about not doing that anymore.

She thought it was a sign that she saw her ex. She said he had broken up with her.  I told her that she didn't need either of them.  I felt like I needed to be a listening ear. She went on to tell me that she would be looking for somewhere to live March 3rd. Her father passed away and she didn't want to live with her step mom because her brother was bi-polar.

When I looked into her blue eyes I saw innocence or maybe it was goodness.

She later mentioned having a niece and a nephew ages 3 and 4.  I told her maybe she should go live in Prosser with those relatives.

She mentioned that she did not have a job because she couldn't think. She couldn't remember more than 3 things. I asked her if she was told that because of a test she said yes.

She also mentioned she would like to live  with her real mom, but her mom wants her to be in school. I suggested maybe she tell her mom she will go to school of she could live with her.

Where do people go if the can't/won't work due to disabilities etc.?  Hopefully their families. But what if there families won't have them?

I could relate to being fatherless. I let her know I understand that it was hard because my father was deceased too. I could relate to emotionally abusive relationships with a boyfriend. I had true empathy. Up until the soon to be homeless and depending on anyone but herself part.

Is charity the pure live of Christ because you can empathize? I could feel the spirit of love in my bosom.

2. A lady was cleaning up. She had two kids and a new baby that was crying. She was trying to have her children pick up then mess of magnets. I went abd helped her. (I have been in that situation lots of times and I could relate. Empathy. It can be overseeing and stressful when a baby is crying.

3. A new baby was crying abd her mother ran off after a toddler who took off. Again I could relate. I tried to rock the baby it didn't do any good. The baby was hungry.

How then do we obtain this empathy if we have not had the experiences?  I wanted to help. Especially the fatherless I kept wondering if I could do more, and if I could that I would be inspired.  I didn't think it would be best to being her home with me.  Could I do something to help her obtain skills for a job? Or could I become a foster parent? There will be many more children just like her.

Do we save the starfish by helping redirect her? And say what we are inspired to say then move on to the next starfish.  We are not the savior, but we can be the angel that helps.

In my home, how can I obtain charity for my children?  How do I seek to understand them?

I was more patient. But it is so easy to fall into patterns. Rushing. Impatience. Scolding. Punishing etc.

The only way out is daily fervent prayer to obtain that love, empathy.

Choosing to be calm and mastering my mother tongue are only the beginning....

Etymology

The definition of words.

pen·chant\ˈpen-chənt, especially British ˈpäⁿ-ˌshäⁿ\
noun
: a strong liking for something or a strong tendency to behave in a certain way

Wiggly at the Store

Analysis:

I took my 5 year old son and my 8 month old baby to the store last night and I have a large list and felt a little bit scrunched for time.

When he wasn't meeting my expectations of staying close to the cart for and hour, I started stressing, getting anxious, and my pride was hurt a couple times, because I chose to be embarrassed that he was standing in front of people carts in la la land.  :)  I felt like I hadn't done my job teaching my .son

I forgot to pre-teach how he act at the store.

Considering it was an hour and he is five he did pretty well and I chose to let me emotions get the better of me. I got mad and felt out of control that weakness caused me to objectify him and try to act upon by criticizing. And letting out my angry with snide remarks to myself. (Or thoughts)

Make a Plan:
Pre-teach
Practice it the right way.
Got to the Store and window shop to practice, and then do the grocery store again.
Or he can't go, natural consequence. (Unfortunately this would be win win to both us. He didn't want to go to begin with.  But it didn't prep him for times when he must go.)

Communicate Effectively: pre-teach, praise, pray for help with my own emotions. Be humble and patient. Parent how I would at home. (Discuss with spouse)

Act Deliberately: follow through with my plan.

*Roles: Remember my role as mother, teacher, and nurturer. Remind him of his role as child, learner. Honor and respect parents.

What it is wisdom?

Reasoning leads to wisdom -nicholeen peck

Vanity

The bible dictionary definition of vanity is:
"Falsehood or deceit. Empty, transitory, fleeting."

I have always thought of it more in the newer dictionary definition as opposed to this definition and that of the Webster's 1828 dictionary. It's amazing the change of "buzz words" or definitions of words of time. Our language has truly been corrupted with the new social contexts, which is why we need to study. Someone who is vain is concerned with appearance and clothing. Which now I understand is empty. They are also proud. Which is putting up a front or deceit and falsehood.  How much deeper I understand the meaning!

I find the study of etymology, or words, fascinating.

In the October 2014 General Conference President Uchtdorf gave a talk titled: Lord is it I?  He said: "Brethern, we must put aside our pride, see beyond our vanity, and in humility ask, Lord is it I?"  I was surprised and thought I don't generally look at myself as vain because I don't have really nice clothing. But now I know that vanity is much deeper than that.

As a man thinketh

" A  man’s  mind  may  be  likened  to  a  garden,  which  may  be  intelligently  cultivated  or  allowed  to  run  wild;;  but  whether  cultivated  or  neglected,  it  must,  and  will  bring  forth.  If  no  useful  seeds  are  put  into  it,  then  an  abundance  of  useless  weed-seeds  will  fall  therein,  and  will  continue  to  produce  their  kind." (Chap 2 pg. 6)

"Man  is  buffeted  by  circumstances  so  long  as  he  believes  himself  to  be  the  creature  of  outside  conditions,  but  when  he  realizes  that  he  is  a  creative  power,  and  that  he  may  command  the  hidden  soil  and  seeds  of  his  being  out  of  which  circumstances  grow;;  he  then  becomes  the  rightful  master  of  himself. " (chap. 2 pg. 6)

" Suffering  is  always  the  effect  of  wrong  thought  in  some  direction.  It  is  an  indication  that  the  individual  is  out  of  harmony  with  himself,  with  the  law  of  his  being.  The  sole  and  supreme  use  of  suffering  is  to  purify,  to  burn  out  all  that  is  useless  and  impure.  Suffering  ceases  for  him  who  is  pure.  There  could  be  no  object  in  burning  gold  after  the  dross  had  been  removed,  and  a  perfectly  pure  and  enlightened  being  could  not  suffer."

"On  the  other  hand,  beautiful  thoughts  of  all  kinds  crystallize  into  habits  of  grace  and  kindliness,  which  solidify  into  genial  and  sunny  circumstances.  Pure  thoughts  crystallize  into  habits  of  temperance  and  self-control,  which  solidify  into  circumstances  of  repose  and  peace.  Thoughts  of  courage,  self-reliance,  and  decision  crystallize  into  manly  habits,  which  solidify  into  circumstances  of  success,  plenty,  and  freedom.  Energetic  thoughts  crystallize  into  habits  of  cleanliness  and  industry,  which  solidify  into  circumstances  of  pleasantness.  Gentle  and  forgiving  thoughts  crystallize  into  habits  of  gentleness,  which  solidify  into  protective  and  preservative  circumstances.  Loving  and  unselfish  thoughts  which  solidify  into  circumstances  of  sure  and  abiding  prosperity  and  true  riches."

Mentoring in the Classics - CS Lewis The Inner Ring

CS Lewis's The Inner Ring.

-Oliver DeMille said that Someone said: whatever you focus on grows. If you focus on losing weight you grow. If you focus on negativity it grows. If you focus on bad behavior or mistakes or problems they grow.

Therefore we need to focus in positivity.  Also when we want to rid ourselves of a bad habit, instead of focusing on it, we need to focus on replacing it with something better.  The Good Better Best talk. So if you don't want your family to watch sports on Sunday focus on worshipping aka family history, family study or game time etc.

-Exclusion is caused from insecurity. If you are exuding you need confident. Calm principled parenting is confidence. (The Power of Calm - Nicholeen Peck)

Agency

(Bednar, Increase in learning, page 3) "the gift of agency is the capacity and power of "independent"action." (Quotes added.)

Satan takes away our agency by taking away our freedoms, by making us dependent.  Dependent on the government.  We need self-reliance to combat this. Be agent. Act and not be acted upon.

Likewise Satan wants us too treat people like objects rather than agents/people. To combat this we need to look at people through spiritual eyes. The world looketh upon the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh upon the heart."

How do we look with spiritual eyes upon the heart?  We look at a person's potential.  They are spirit sons and daughters of God first.  "Each person has greatness". (Oliver DeMille)

Faith, then what?

I have been blessed with the Gift of Faith.  Coupled with that is always: hope and charity. So if I want to be complete in my Faith then I need to learn and understand (in my heart) what they are.

Charity is not just works or gift giving, but a condition of the soul, a quality of our character. The gift of charity flows from God as He reveals His love for us, and from our reciprocating—feeling love for God, His work, and His children. That is why Alma could prophesy, “And see that ye have faith, hope, and charity, and then ye will always abound in good works” (Alma 7:24). Pride is the opposite of charity. Selfishness, indifference, and indolence are enemies of charity.

https://www.lds.org/ensign/1996/12/a-vision-of-service?lang=eng

What started this search was the above listed article. I was wondering whether service can sometimes be a doctrine, or only just a principle.  Based on Elder Bednar's book and DVD set Increase in Learning. He teaches and invites us to answer our struggles and questions by asking: What (true) doctrine understood (aka understood in our hearts) would change help with our question.

Do you want there to be more visiting teaching done? Instead of putting a scarey person in fearing people into it for temporary change or by doing some kind of program...we need to help them have a change of heart or understand doctrine and principles.   So what principles and doctrine to our children not understand, what do we need understand?

What do we need to gain a testimony of and how do we gain it?  Search, Ponder, and Pray.  God always talks in 3's.  :)
